The Store reccomended Norton when I purchased the computer?

When I purchased the computer package the Norton antivirus was the one they put in with the computer. The person who came out from the store was the one who installed it for us. The countdown is how many days left we have to activate the product. I myself know nothing about computers thats why I trusted the store where I purchased the computer from to give us all we needed for setup. See is anyone having trouble installing their Norton anti virus for more infro.|||I stopped recommending Norton when their QA went downhill, the installer they used started requiring IE to be on the machine, and they started charging for virus definition updates.

The store will typically recommend a product that they can receive profit or kickbacks on, not necessarily because it is the best software they know of. They are in business to make money after all. But this depends on the individual, I've had plenty of people at stores recommend other items or even stores for things that they sell.

I now typically recommend AVG, which has a free version with free virus def. updates, or Kaspersky, which has been rated as the most effective.

Of course, I also recommend using Linux and therefore not having an issue with viruses at all.

Links and info can be found here:

Norton is more like a Brand like the name Adidas, Nike etc.

I wouldn't recommend u using Norton as installing is so long and I think that its one of the useless program out in the Anti-Virus market that takes long to install.

The store probably recommended this b'coz they r maybe getting paid for recommending it. Also I think that McAfee is like this also. It so badly slowed my computer that I had to boot in Safe Mode to get rid of it.|||Its $39-$59 a year to use that. It is a OK program. But it is a resource hog. I never met a person that actually writes malicious viruses. So I am apprehensive of those that make billions making Anti Virus widgets.

Yes viruses are real, and yes they can cause havoc on a PC. I got the same thing on my new PC, but my ISP offers AV,Anti Spy-ware and other junk at no extra cost.

Best thing is a Backup Routine, viruses will happen, and the AV Corporations can only respond after the virus had been identified, so it is a case of Back Up the good data, let the virus make its way in,then install the clean OS from the backup that you made.

OK, backups take 30 minutes to make, or less, it is better to have a good Data Image to replace the virus infected, data corruption, power surge or whatever act of god can happen.

You trusted a sales rep that works at a store, the sales red will make a commission when you 'activate' the software, that is business.

The intro version has this and that that comes with the extra $, I am just anti corporation when there business is making a profit off of peoples misery and data loss.

I think Windows Defender is a free application, I know Linux is free, well real Linux is.

Just pay or do whatever makes you happy, because your happiness is where the importance really is.

|||I can't answer you r question specifically about norton. There are good anti-virus programs out there that are free: avast is one of them.

If you want to continue getting your norton installed, you may have to renew your subscription - every so often you have to buy a new subscription.|||Yeah, the first response is right. Basically the store installed a trial version of Norton on your pc that can be used for a certain number of days. I personally would not recommend using Norton for your antivirus protection as it is one that a lot of hackers know how to get around. If you need a good antivirus solution I would suggest Zonealarm which you can download from www.download.com. It works very well and I have never had problems with it. Hope this helps.
