What would be a better choice for a faster more powerful pc desktop computer?

i do not have too much knowledge regarding processors and ram and their power behind a computer. i know that basically the bigger the better but since im on a tight budget and cant afford the whole package, which would be a faster and more powerful computer?

a quad core with 2 gb ram

or

a dual core with 4 gb ram

thanks!|||For the processing power to work well with your system, you need RAM.

Also, how many GHz does the dual core have? The quad core?

Typically, the best choice in this equation would to be to go with the dual core.

If you're trying to get more RAM, depending on what type you want, it isn't that expensive. You could always buy some extra Gigabytes of RAM to put in.

Best of luck to you|||Well coming from the standpoint of someone who likes to edit videos and such Quad core all the way and for gaming I'd stick with the dual core since their are only a hand full of games that take advantage of 4 cores and is not very significant 5-15% and as of RAM Just get 2 gigs and then just buy the same set later on if you find that you need more.|||At the same clock speed, a quad core with 2GB of RAM.

But if you have to decrease clock speed to afford the extra cores, then the dual core with 4GB of RAM would be better.

Actually, choice three would be best:

HIGH CLOCK SPEED dual core with 2GB of RAM.|||See Feb 2010 issue of Maximum PC

Our computer has a virus. How can we fix it and prevent it from happening again?

We believe it's a virus. We try and access differant web-sites and the screens keep changing. Also, we are finding strange icons on our desktop. We tried downloading a free microsoft virus protection package but it didn't help. Should we take the computer in for repair or have a technician come to the house? This computer is a few years old and apparently the virus protection package that came with the system has expired. Help!!!!|||Assuming you are using Windows, get Norton AnitVirus. It retails for $40 and is sold at all department and computer stores. It will remove existing viruses, while protecting you from viruses in the future. Having a technician come to your house should only be the last straw, it's very expensive and usually unnecessary.

If your computer is outdated, you could also just buy a new one. Just make sure you put antivirus software on it right away.|||Download and run AVG Antivirus. it will find and quarantine all your viruses and its free

How much computer programming do you need to know to work in the GIS field?

I have a degree in Geography. I took an intro GIS class in college and enjoyed it. We used the ArcGis software package from ESRI in the class. I am now thinking of getting a Masters or a Certificate in GIS but I noticed that many colleges require computer programming classes. I am only a geographer and have no experience with programming so I am worried. Also virtually every job posting that I have seen requires programming experience. Any advice?|||Hi Roger,

I'm doing Masters in GIS with a bachelors in computer science engineering. Actually when I was about to take GIS, I worried for not being a geographer :) . To work with GIS, you just need to know the basic use of computers.Arcgis is very user friendly most of the time. I do agree that job posting requires programming knowledge. You might need programming knowledge if you want to be in developing side, like gis software developer or gis database manager or publishing maps over internet. With your degree in geo,you would probably use GIS as a tool in geography. So do not worry!! You ll be fine. It again depends on the school you pick for Masters , which may ask you to take few programming courses.

Netflix users: Is Battlestar Galactica (the modern version) available for streaming to a computer?

Is it safe to transport a desktop computer in a car?

Every week, my mom takes my stuff from her house to my dad's. I have been doing this with my Xbox 360 but am now thinking about building my own gaming computer. It would be much cheaper and powerful if it was a desktop, and I was wondering, how safe would it be for the computer to move it in a car this often. I could package it and hate being restricted on this by having divorced parents, so is it possible and if so, how?|||Hi,If you keep it out of sight and out of mind it should be alright.I also would change my times of delivery.also keep the fact to yourself about the moving of the items. Good Luck.|||You could, but try resting it on some pillows or some kind of sillicone which will reduce the shock from going over cracks and speed humps in the road. Otherwise, how about buying a net and hanging it from the roof of your car and then having the computer sitting in the net. That way, it is elevated from the floor and won't have all the shock from driving over rough parts of the road.|||It would be alright, I'd just make sure you don't leave it in a hot car for to long and just be careful with it. Gentle moving in a car won't hurt it, but a lot of banging around could kill the read/write heads on the hard drive.|||yes it is safe to transport your computer in a car. bus plane 1000's are transported daily just be careful how you handle it if you switch it on while the car is in motion (moving)|||Not a good idea. I have to say, I don't aggree with leaving the case plugged in. You are grounding it, but there is no reason to. All you need to do is ground yourself to the case, not the wall outlet. Don't leave it plugged in. Bad call buddy.

Also a grounded mat is good and I gues that you will be taking a chance with a table, but I have been doing this for years and a table (not metal) has never done me wrong yet.|||Just set it on the desktop or tabletop - use some newspaper to cushion the parts. We just got a package for AT%26amp;T to do Wi-fi. Is there a way to make her desktop wireless without having to buy something to do it? She is running a Vista.|||Unless it has a wireless card installed you will have to buy either a wireless card or run cable to phone company unit. Or have another jack installed by local phone co.|||You need a router and a usb wireless adapter. The router you need to configure properly - it won't automatically let the other pc use the internet (unless of course you have ALL security features turned off but I don't recommend this)... The usb wireless adapter would connect to the desktop and this would be what will identify it on the router. You will need to configure the network settings on the desktop too, to see the network, it won't automatically work without configuration... Vista is a little picky too about the settings - so you may have to try several combination before you get it to work...|||I presume the "package for AT%26amp;T to do wireless" is an ADSL modem / router / switch / wireless device (adsl modem router).

To enable the desktop to connect to the adsl modem router, you have two choices:

1. Run a straight CAT5 cable from desktop to network port of the adsl modem router

2. Purchase and install a wireless network interface for the desktop. This can be a USB or a PCI style device. This option will work only if your desktop is in range of the wireless router.|||you ATT package should have included the wireless router. All you need is a wireless card in the desktop. What is the best way to fix my computer?

A few months ago, I got a new broadband package on my pc. Since then, my computer has been very slow. It takes a long time to log on to my user and doing general things such as surfing the net takes an excruciatingly long time.

What, would you say, would be the best way to make it faster? It is a old PC and hasn't got much RAM, (only 256 mb) so perhaps adding RAM could make it better?

I don't know... any ideas?|||Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

Want to return a computer mouse?

I brought a computer mouse on 5/24/08 at Office Depot. I used it for 6 weeks then it wouldn't work anymore. I still had the original receipt but not the packaging. I tried to return it tonight but they wouldn't take it back. Can they do this? Can I do anything else to get my money back?

I don't want another one because it seemed as though it would probably break too. In the meantime, I got another mouse at Staples.|||Perhaps It's the brand of mouse. A week ago I bought a new wireless optical mouse, the very first time I tried it, it didn't work. So I returned it and swapped for another. I had bought a Gigaware, and exchanged the Gigaware for a logitech. As I later found out Logitech is the leading brand of mice, and Gigaware greatly fails in the mice field. I don't see why they wouldn't have taken it back if you had the receipt. Maybe they required the original packaging.|||It take a few weeks to get used to the pad instead of the mouse. But you can get a mouse so long as you have the drivers and then plug it to the USB port.

Where can I get a gaming computer package under or around 1000$ ???

Just curious, because I'm always looking for computers (eventhough I'm nowhere to affording them). Wondering if like "bestbuy","Futureshop","Source" or some other store had some package deals on computers. I'm looking for a computer thats meant for extreme gaming but like around $1000, max $1200. I would like it somewhat future ready but it doesn't largely have to. And if any came with an AMD processor that would be great.|||Your best bet is to build your own! Its really strait forward, even more when you get a "Barebone" kit. Its everything that a gaming computer needs, just some assembly required. If you know anything about computer hardware you should be able to put it together yourself. Barebone kits come with really good looking cases, good quality motherboard, CPU (you choose Intel or AMD) Video cards are a really big issue in gaming PCs. Most barebone kits have a kickass video card (depending on how much cash you are willing to dish out) Note that you might have to buy things like DVD Burner drives, Printers, Keyboards, Monitors ect. outside the barebone kit. Here are some links to some barebone kits that might interest you:

^^This one costs about $400 so you have $600 - $800 for parts like monitors, keyboards, speakers, mouse ect. (depending on what kind of monitor you want, this should be fine for gaming style stuff)

This way you will save a bunch and have the choice of monitor, gaming keyboard (like the Logitech G11), Gaming mouse (Logitech G5 Laser), Altec Lansing speekers, and have a bit left over for some case mods (ie. Blue light inside the case window ect.)

Hope I have helped, Liam|||Did you try dell? or e-bay?|||www.tigerdirect.com

Does anyone have knowledge with shipping a computer on a plane?

Hi I'm looking to ship my computer out during flight. I know how to package it and stuff, but I was wondering what process this all goes though? I already have 2 suitcases ad would it be an extra charge to have them personally ship it with me or is it a different catagory?|||You could be charged for extra baggage. the airlines allow you carry on luggage and so many checked bags. Usually you get one free check and are charged for the others and to avoid being over the weight limit check with the airline you intend to fly with to see what guidelines they have for baggage. It may be cheaper to ship your computer and some of your luggage. It is best to call the airlines and know what the charges will be ahead of time so there are no surprises and no time for alternative methods. Also, will they insure the computer for loss or damage. How do you save a flash game onto your computer so that you can play it without connecting to the internet?

My connection is a real pain in the neck. Whenever I try to play a flash game online, it gets stuck. Is it possible to play these games offline on our computer? I don't have macromedia flash package but i have the adobe flash player. is it possible to download these games and play them without connecting to the internet?|||use Firefox and browse to the page that has the game on it. Right click on the page (not the game) and click "show page content" or something like that. It will come up with a window. Scroll down till you find the game (it may look weird, it should say "embed" and end in .swf.

Click on that, then click "save as" or "download" or something in the bottom of the screen, and your done!

Please vote as best :)|||Using Firefox browser is easy as it allows you to download 'add-ons' just for just this type of thing. Do a search for FireFox add-ons then search the add-ons section for Flash Video Downloader.

Once installed (needs a restart) - a blue arrow should appear at the bottom right of your screen. Click this and it will ask you where to save it. It may show several files, just choose the one that resembles the name of your game. Remember this location and make sure you open that file with Firefox again.

The game should now work whether you're online or offline. Some Flash developers have got smart to this though - and certain games can only ever be run from the website. If the game does not play, this could be the reason, however you should try right click on the the game and select play.

If you struggle with any of the steps above, look at YouTube for any tutorial videos.

Hope this helps...|||The easiest way would be using an online flash downloader to downlaod it, There is one here to recommend: http://www.swfkits.com/flash-downloader/ it can detect flash files as long as it's in .swf format and auto download it to your PC. However some companies are worst then others. In my opinion I would avoid Dell and Gateway like the plague; as far as cost they are the least expensive; but as far as quality they are the lowest; they use the cheapest parts; they outsource most of the support; and they have poor customer service.

I would go with either Toshiba, Acer or HP. In my experiences in fixing these; they are built the best and fail the least. Now these will cost more then Dell and Gateway; but you get what you pay for.

How hard are these computer skills?

I want to do the diploma for technology at TAFE, and I have pretty much have average computer skills like i'm not over informed about computers and such does this matter?

Are these tasks I listed below very hard to pick up on?

Design organisational documents using computing packages

鈥?Operate a personal computer

鈥?Operate computer hardware

鈥?Operate computing packages

鈥?Integrate commercial computing packages

鈥?Use computer operating system

鈥?Work effectively in an IT environment

Communicate in the workplace|||It's very easy to operate %26amp; understand computer.

The main thing is that you should have a very good person who can help/teach you to understand the working of computer as well as how you can operate computer.

But also you should have interest to learn computer otherwise even if you get some good tutor, you won't be able to understand it.

TIPS : Start learning computer practically rather than theoretical. This will help you to learn faster.

鈥?Operate computing packages = "installing a program"

鈥?Integrate commercial computing packages = "can you use Visual Studio"

鈥?Use computer operating system = "know how to get to your BIOS settings"

鈥?Work effectively in an IT environment = "do ur dang job"

鈥?Communicate in the workplace = ''play well with others"|||that depends on your definition of "hard", knowing how to use a computer would be a good start, if you count bugs and give strangers great big hugs, maybe not for you

I need a package deal. I will need a laptop computer and ability to access internet in remote places (oilfield). I will also need a phone with internet options. I have been looking into the apple's. I do not know what hardware I need to buy. I work in the oilfield and will be assigned in remote west tx locations. Communication and a laptop that will connect is my goal. I am limited in computer experince so the more user friendly the better. I am not limited in a price budget. Just need some advice.|||Of course the iPhone will give you internet.

As far as computers go, you need to first figure out which kind of card or phone you plan to use to connect to the internet. Some cards might use USB while others will use an actual card slot in the computer. Once you decide that, then I would look to see if a MacBook or a MacBook Pro is what you need. If you have time or are in the right location, I would suggest going to a local Apple Store and getting some time with one of the Specialists or Geniuses who can discuss it with you and show you your options. Chances are, you'll be using the computer for more than internet, and overall, Apple will give you the better experience. I know because I've used both platforms. |||Most laptops have an option for an internal phone card so you can access the internet through a celluar network.

You might want to consider a laptop that is built a bit more rugged than the typical consumer models such as a Dell Latitude E6400 ATG "Meets strict MIL-STD 810F requirements for extreme temperatures, vibration, dust intrusion and altitude"

Also gaming quality laptops are often built to more rugged standards with both the Dell XPS M1730 and the Dell/Alienware m15x having very solid construction and will cost less than the E6400

You should also grab an extra battery pack or two depending on your anticipated access to power. Keep in mind that most specs for the hours of operation on battery power are hugely optimistic and 2 hours is a good safe way to calculate how many spare batteries you want

If the camcorder uses miniDV or Digital8 tape, it uses the DV port (this is a 4-pin) and connects to the firewire port (not USB) of your computer. If you don't have a firewire port, install one. The port installed on the computer will be most likely 6-pin... but can be 4-pin. It depends what you have or decide to install. You need firewire400 (Also known as i.Link or IEEE1394a). USB will only be used for web streaming (if the camcorder has the feature) or for transferring stills.

If the camcorder is hard drive or flash memory based, it should mount using USB and appear as a USB mass storage device. If it does not, you need to install the drivers available on the CD in the box or download from Sony.

If the camcorder is DVD based, you will need to have a drawer loading DVD drive on your computer and you will rip the DVD with something like HandBrake.

If the camcorder is analog (hi8), you will need to get a Analog/Digital bridge from Pinnacle or Canopus.

If the camera is for taking stills and happens to take highly compressed videos, take the memory card out of the camera and use a card reader to transfer the videos to the computer.|||Trying to get your video into the computer? read my guide for tips on doing that here...

Whatever you may do, a computer will get slower if it goes on running unformatted for more than a year. Still, some basic tips to speed up your computer may be found here:

http://pctonic.blogspot.com/2007/02/spee鈥?/a>|||Over time your computer (blame Windows!!) adds more and more files and updates. Most of these get stored away in old temporary folders that your computer forgets about. That is why your computer is slowing down. Think of it as never changing the oil in your car. The engine gets build-up and crap in it and your performance begins to degrade. With a computer it's sometimes necessary to to backup all of your programs and files onto an external hard drive and reinstall Windows. This can take many hours to do and is a big pain. A computer repair shop could do it for you if you want to go that route.

In the meantime, here some things that you could do without having to do a clean reinstallation.

To speed up your computer try this:

1. Start%26gt; Run%26gt; type: msconfig

2. Click "Startup"

3. Disable any program that absolutely DOES NOT have to startup when you first turn on your computer. Quicktime and RealPlayer are the number one culprits. They do not need to be running when you start your computer. You can start them when you need them. Make sure that you only disable the programs/apps that you are sure of. System32 files need to be running.

4. Download Ad-Aware SE (freeware) and use it to remove spyware. Spyware slows your computer waaaaaay down.

5. Use your anti-virus software to ensure your computer is clean. www.avast.com has an awesome FREE antivirus programs that kicks a** and uses far less resources than MacAfee and WAY less than Norton. PCWorld says it's just as good as the pay antivirus services.

6. Rearrange your hard disk for slightly better performance.

Here's how:

I. Start%26gt; Control Panel%26gt; Upper left corner make sure you are looking at the Category View (not Classic View)

II. Click "Performance and Maintenance"

III. Click "Free up space on your hard disk" and follow the instruction to remove old junk files.

IV. Click "Rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs runs faster" It will take 30min-1hr+ to finish this step. The Windows program will rearrange your computers files in a better configuration and remove spaces and gaps.

V. Add more RAM (memory). This is one of the best things that you can do for your computer to speed it up!!

I hope this helps. Good luck!! You better give me some points for this. It took me a while to type it!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHA!!|||I understand your problem - I have had the same troubles in the past. The problem is that most Windows OS have a life span. Experts say that in about 9 months, a fresh install is usually necessary.

Over time, you error files are accumulated that slow down your programs and can even cause crashes. The more you use your computer, the more error files are created. The most frustrating thing is that these error files are created from simple day-to-day computer usage.

It's a small and inexpensive utility I use it to clean up my PC once every two weeks or so. It removes these accumulating error files, fixes all registry errors and does a lot of other cleaning up activity. I now have a PC running for over 12 months and I haven't seen any deteriation in its performance. However, I would suggest using the program regularly - at least once a month. Do try out PC Speedscan and let me know your feedback.|||1.You have to clean up temporary internet files that are accumulated.

Trust me, get an eMac and Logic Express, and you will have an incredibly sick music studio inside a computer. Make and record any kind of music.

In the future, you will be able to plug-in microphones, turn tables, guitars, and amplifiers. Almost any music equipment you can get can be plugged in to add value to your music studio in a computer.|||Are you into turntablism/scratching or just matching up music?

If you just want to match up music, you can get any cheap digital turntable - plenty of them (although toy quality) are under 350.

If you want to get into turntablism, its another story. You will want vinyl since its actually easier than digital turntablism. Then, move into the digital aspect. You could start that with a $150 turntable and $20 in sample records and a cheap $100 mixer. A beginners setup yes, but you are just getting into it.

Remember, with digital, there is latency - the delay of the act to the computer. You can spend 500 alone on a soundcard w midi that reduces latency. Digital turntables can hold 'timecode' audio that is run into your computer. The timecode sounds like noise, but its really data. The computer hears that scratched data, and in return, scratches the audio digitally on your computer. Not something for me personally, but it is a interesting thing nonetheless.

Now, one thing you may have going for you is that Norton (and most of the major antivirus producers) now sell the software in a package that allows you to legally install and use the antivirus suite on up to three computers.

If you purchased a retail version of Norton antivirus, the odds are good you have this licensing model. Check the documentation that came with the Norton software. If you do indeed have the full retail version, you should be licensed to install that on three computers. You've used one license for your computer, so you should have two licenses available. If you wish, you can use another license to install the Norton software on your son's laptop.

If you don't have the standard home-user version of Norton (for example, the version you are using came bundled with your computer when you bought it) you still have options.

Of course, you could buy a copy of Norton (or any other major retail antivirus package) for his computer. Or, you can try any of the really good free antivirus applications that are out there. Here are links to a few:

All of those are good packages... not as full featured as some of the retail products, but you can't beat the price!|||Norton sucks get avast or avg|||You probably have a single user license and will have to buy another copy whether you go with Norton or not.|||you can get anything you want. but personally i would not get norton|||if you have a norton disk that allows up to 3 installs, you can install it on his computer.|||if I was you i would cancel norton, It's a rip off I would get AVG anti-virus it is free and does the job well i have got it and my computer has never had a virus :)|||GET A MAC|||no he cannot use the one included in the package.

Once you activate the license key for your system it cannot be used again, at least not easily.

Have go to www.CNET.com

Go to the download section and download AVG antivirus

Its good and its FREE!!!!|||You can't legally use the same copy of Norton on two machines at once unless it was sold as a multi-user pack. In general, he should get his own copy of an anti-virus.

Hope that helps.|||Norton is really really really rubbish.

Try avast, it's free and works much better!|||i prefer kaspersky but he can use the one you've got just enter same key|||He can have whatever he wants.

FYI, Norton stinks. My husband downloaded the same virus TWICE when I was "protected" with Norton - in the end my computer was fried and I needed a new one (it was an 8 year old HP without a windows disk - reformat went bad). THEN he dowloaded ANOTHER virus through Norton. I was up to date on everything, it just didn't work.
