How do you get rid of a computer virus?

I think my computer may be infected with a virus or something. It won't allow me to open internet explorer at all and I keep getting these pop ups from security saying I have an infection, but I can't afford to buy the whole security package. Is there a way to reboot my computer or get rid of this for free? I have windows vista.|||download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, update it and run a full scan. Remove everything it finds.

Format your PC


install a new version of Vista


Install all drivers from motherboard CD

update it everyday
